Lucy Willis studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford where she received a rigorous academic training which included drawing from life and the antique as well as studies of anatomy. After leaving the Ruskin she set up her own workshop in Greece teaching etching and drawing to students attending the Aegean School of Fine Art.
The artist then returned to England and began to devote more of her energies to watercolour. She won the 1992 BP Portrait Award for an oil painting inspired by her time as artist in residence at Shepton Mallet Prison. Much of her work is inspired by her travels to India, Africa and Greece.
She was an invited artist in 1997 and 2000 in the Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and has also participated at the New Academy Gallery, London, in 2000 in an exhibition entitled 'The Crown Estate in Art'.
Lucy has produced a number of publications, which provide practical information on watercolour techniques, step by step demonstrations and suggestions on where to look for ideas and inspiration. Each is illustrated with paintings and art from Lucy’s portfolio.
Press Quotes
“It is perhaps her form, her manner rather than her content that holds the attention and stays in the memory. The luminous colour is laid down with such assured rapidity and freshness of touch that you empathise with the process.”— Edward Phelps, Arts Review, July 1991.
